On behalf of the USA Boxing Gulf Association and the Board of Directors we would like to express our condolences on the recent loss of our friend Joe Spudic in the professional and amateur boxing community. He was a great asset that will be greatly missed.

Joe Spudic,

A longtime friend of Houston boxing, Joe Spudic passed away last weekend. Originally from Indiana, Joe came to Houston around 1985 to join the HBA organization developing boxers in a promotional and matchmaking capacity. He later joined the TDLR as a Combative Sports Inspector and was a fixture at area pro shows. He was well-liked by many who got to know him.
There will be a memorial service for him this Saturday, October 5th at 1:00pm, at Lakewood Church on the 2nd floor.

JaimallPickettFrom the Gulf LBC Board of Directors
With tremendous sadness, we must report another tragic loss of life for the Gulf Amateur Boxing Association. In the early morning of July 27th, 2013, Jaimall Pickett succumbed after a short battle versus cancer at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He was just 31 years old and his advanced stage had only been discovered a few weeks prior. Jaimall was an energetic lively young man who always had a bright smile on his face. He competed in multiple Houston Golden Gloves tournaments training at and representing Savannah’s Boxing Club.

Let our thoughts and prayers be with the Pickett family and Jaimall’s friends as they remember his life and grieve through this transition. As well our hearts go out to the members of Willie and Clara Savannah’s boxing family who’ve inexplicably lost a 2nd young boxer in as many weeks.

If you would like to make a donation to the family to assist with their medical and funeral expenses, you can call 832-403-0456 or donate via PayPal to dable@firstam.com

The Going Home Services for Jaimall will be held on Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 at 2:00pm at

Serenity
8619 Windswept Lane
Houston, TX 77063

May He Rest In Peace.

Damazo TelloOn behalf of the Gulf Amateur Boxing Association, we regret to inform you that we have lost one of our members today.  On Monday evening, Damazo Tello was involved in an accident on Gulf Freeway and was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.  After undergoing tests, doctors determined that his brain function had ceased; Damazo has passed away this afternoon.

Damazo was an excellent boxer who represented the Gulf LBC in many events in Texas and across the country.  He represented Ray’s boxing club under Ray Ontiveros and later Savannah’s boxing club under Clara Savannah.

He is survived by his cousin Omar Tello, also a standout Gulf boxer, and a two month old son, Ezekiel.

Damazo touched the lives of many within the Gulf and as we remember him and grieve, our thoughts and prayers are with the Tello family as they cope with this terrible loss.
