With great sadness, the Gulf LBC, Houston, Texas, amateur & professional boxing has lost an icon of our sport. Savannah has passed away at the age of 85 after a full life of giving and helping hundreds of boxers. With his wife Clara, Willie’s Savannah’s Boxing Association and Youth Club was a haven that kept kids off the streets and taught them the importance of education, while providing them nutrition, fitness and discipline.
Savannah was the embodiment of everything that is great about amateur boxing. He held genuine love for those he tutored. He funded many college educations. He turned “fat kids” into World Champions. He taught novices to win with basic fundamentals and fed his boxers ON THE WAY to weigh-ins, caring about their health and well-being first and foremost.
Willie cared passionately about the Gulf LBC and USA Boxing, advising and participating in leadership decisions while hosting and attending boxing shows in support of the entire community. His loss is truly the end of an era. However his legacy shall live on forever in the teachings and love that he provided to all the lives that he has touched.
